Two Weeks Left to Make a Buck (or 10) in the Shapeways 3D Animation to 3D Print Competition

3D model marketplace Shapeways is looking for 3D animators who work in film or video games to try their hand at 3D printing, and they want to pay you to do it. All you need to do is enter an original model into their new 3D printing content and they’ll give you at least $10!

To celebrate reaching the membership milestone of 35,000 users, Facebook’s 3D Modeling and Animation Group has teamed up with Shapeways for a unique 3D modelling and 3D printing contest that you win simply by entering. To enter you simply need to join the Facebook group and upload an original 3D model or figure of your own design to Shapeways. It must be printable in the plastic materials that Shapeways offers, and it must print for less than $200.

Shapeways and the Modeling and Animation Group administrators will judge the entry based on how creative you are with your design and how far you push the boundaries of 3D printing. The techniques that you use to 3D model will also be considered, as well as the printability of your entry. All models entered into the contest must meet Shapeways 3D printing guidelines for the material that you select. If your model will not 3D print, it will not be entered into the contest.

Models must be uploaded to Shapeways in one of their supported 3D printing files. They support quite a few file types, including STL, OBJ, X3D and several others, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a file type that you can use. Once your model is uploaded you must tagged it with “3DModelingandAnimationGroup” or your model will not be entered into the design contest.

One first place winner will receive $200 of Shapeways credit, and their model 3D printed and shipped to them for free. One second place winner will receive $50 of Shapeways credit, and two third place winners will receive $25 of Shapeways credit. And every designer that has a model entered into the contest will receive $10 of Shapeways credit. Basically, Shapeways is giving you ten bucks to put a model online.

The contest has been going on for a few weeks already and has already had a bunch of great entries, but no clear winners yet so you still have a shot at winning. You have until October 15th to enter your 3D model, just make sure that you join the 3D Modeling and Animation group on Facebook first if you’re not already a member. You can upload your model and see all of the Contest rules here.

Good luck designers!
