TÜV SÜD and ASTM International partner to accelerate adoption of additive manufacturing

TÜV SÜD, a leading technical service corporation, and global standards developer ASTM International have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Formnext to develop programs accelerating the adoption of additive manufacturing technologies.

Dr. Mohsen Seifi, director of global additive manufacturing programs at ASTM International, explained, “To unleash the full potential of AM, we need a smart global ecosystem of research, standardization, education, testing, and certification.”

“We are pleased to sign this MOU, which aligns two globally-recognized organizations’ complementary strengths and will help create a robust technical foundation for AM innovation across many industries.”

TÜV SÜD and ASTM International

As a certification and qualification specialist, TÜV SÜD has recently developed a new certification program that allows metal-powder manufacturers to prove the quality of its processes. Last month, it also signed an MoU with thyssenkrupp Innovations, the additive manufacturing arm of multinational conglomerate engineering group thyssenkrupp, to further develop “additive-manufacturing-enabled solutions.”

Conversely, earlier this year, ASTM International, partnered with Innovate UK, the British Standards Institution (BSI), and the UK Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry, to develop technical standards for directed energy deposition (DED).

The new partnership between TÜV SÜD and ASTM International will seek to create educational, advisory, qualification, and certification services. This will focus on areas including land transportation and mobility, air transportation, industrial plants, consumer products, and healthcare.

Accelerating additive manufacturing adoption

Moreover, this partnership involves the ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence, which previously announced a “Request For Ideas (RFI)” from its members who are in need of short-term R&D funding.

Following the signing of the MoU, Ken Walsh, Principal Commercial Officer of the U.S. Commercial Service at the U.S. Consulate in Düsseldorf, added, “[Additive manufacturing] is changing production globally and turning traditional business models upside down. It is therefore important that world-renowned AM organizations based both here and in the U.S., develop these new technologies in close cooperation.”

The U.S. Commercial Service provided a space for the event, but the U.S. Government is not part of the MoU.
