Designed specifically for medical applications such as patient-specific anatomical models, surgical guides and medical tooling, the PolyJet system is compatible with a whole host of sterilizable and biocompatible 3D printing resins. Offering a build volume measuring 140 x 200 x 190mm, the J5 MediJet is characterized by its printlab-suitable compact footprint and multi-material 3D printing capabilities.
Osnat Philipp, Healthcare Vice President at Stratasys, states, “For small to mid sized hospitals, we’re enabling access to models and guides with a medical-specific 3D printer that is office-friendly and affordable, while ensuring sterilization is easy so you can bring models right into the operating room with you.”
PolyJet 3D printing with Stratasys
The extensive PolyJet series is Stratasys’ proprietary range of high-speed material jet 3D printers. Looking at the J5 line, we have the J55, which is aimed at professional designers and engineers. The system looks to produce in-house ‘enterprise-quality’ prototypes at a third of the price of industrial-grade competitors. Also included in the J5 line is the J5 DentaJet, which was developed specifically for dental applications.
On the other hand, Stratasys’ flagship J8 range comprises the full-color J850 Prime 3D printer, the mid-level J850 Pro, the entry-level J826, and more. With a maximum model size of 255 x 252 x 200mm, the J826 is the smallest and most accessible machine in the series.
The J5 MediJet
Stratasys’ latest addition to the J5 line comes complete with five different material slots, enabling customers to 3D print multi-color medical models, drilling and cutting guides, and more. Looking inside the chamber, we have the company’s patented rotation build platform, along with a fixed inkjet print head. This design is intended to improve reliability while streamlining machine maintenance.
The J5 MediJet also prides itself on its productivity, as Stratasys claims it can deliver print speeds up to 30% faster than comparable 3D printers. The simplified additive manufacturing workflow features automatic build tray arrangement, model corrections, and 3MF file format support.
When it comes to material compatibility, the MediJet supports rigid, rubberlike, transparent, and opaque resins for over 500,000 color combinations – this includes Stratasys’ SUP710 support material. A number of the biocompatible resins are certified for limited bone and tissue contact, permanent skin contact, and even for breathing gas pathways. The system is also capable of processing the company’s affordable DraftWhite offering, which can reportedly result in up to 30% lower manufacturing costs when compared to outsourcing.
Furthermore, the MediJet is certified for use with third-party, 510K-cleared DICOM segmentation software, meaning customers will be able to use it for clinical diagnostic purposes.
Philipp adds, “We also believe the J5 MediJet printer can help medical device companies bring new innovations to market faster by providing models for benchmark testing of medical devices and for product demonstrations with models showing the actual pathologies the devices are meant to treat.”
