UK-based metal 3D printer manufacturer and engineering company Renishaw has now opened its apprenticeship applications for 2019. Open to 15-17 year olds, this year Renishaw is hoping to gain a record number of recruits to mark the 40th anniversary of the program.
Chris Pockett, Renishaw Head of Communications, comments, “Renishaw has consistently recruited apprentices since 1979 because of the value they add to the company,”
“Apprentices have the opportunity to work on projects in a range of departments to find their passion and future career direction. Our apprentices go on to have fulfilling careers in a wide range of engineering and commercial positions in the company.
Metal and metrology
Renishaw is particularly known for its metal 3D printers which are utilized in various sectors, notably medical and dental. In the past two years, the company has reported strong financial returns with the latest results reporting a 14% growth in revenue.
The company is headquartered in Gloucestershire but also has operations in South Wales, Edinburgh, Exeter, and offices in thirty-seven countries. In addition to additive manufacturing systems, e.g. the RenAM 500 and RenAM 500Q, Renishaw also operates a metrology business, which includes probe scanning devices for quality assurance, such as the high-speed OSP60 probe equipped with 3D scanning technology.
The future additive manufacturing workforce
In this year’s record-breaking recruitment attempt, the company plans to hire sixty-eight apprentices to join at ground level and work their way up through the company. To raise awareness of the program and celebrate its long history, Renishaw recently held an event at its Gloucestershire headquarters. Over five hundred students who registered their interest in STEM education attended the event, which including talks and presentation by existing ambassadors of the Renishaw team.
Speaking of her own experience Lucy Spiteri-Beale, a software apprentice and STEM ambassador at Renishaw, said “My teachers pushed university as the only option after leaving school. However, I was lucky to hear from STEM Ambassadors at Renishaw at the time who encouraged me to apply for a degree apprenticeship, which allows me to study at university while working.”
An engineering apprentice, Ryan Taylor, adds, “At Renishaw, apprentices are heavily involved in projects from the start […] Each department treats you as a valued member of the team and offer you opportunities for personal development.”
Currently, Renishaw is offering apprenticeships in mechanical and electrical engineering, embedded electronic engineering, software engineering, and IT. Apprentices join the team at Renishaw’s Gloucestershire and South Wales sites.
The deadline for 2019 intake is Friday, 1 March.
