QUALUP introduces rotating PIVOT printhead and 3D printing AI tool

QUALUP, a French manufacturer specializing in FFF additive manufacturing systems, is set to introduce two significant innovations at Formnext 2024: the PIVOT rotating printhead and the QU PREDICT AI analysis tool. The PIVOT printhead features a unique rectangular nozzle design, enabling the extrusion of material in a ribbon form rather than the traditional round filament. This design facilitates sharper edges and precise deposition, particularly beneficial for complex patterns and smooth surfaces. The infinite rotation capability allows dynamic adjustment of the nozzle orientation relative to the print path, enhancing control over trajectory and reducing material gaps or overflow.

Weighing only 750 grams, PIVOT is lightweight and can be mounted on existing 3D printers without major modifications. Its all-metal construction withstands temperatures exceeding 300°C, making it suitable for high-temperature thermoplastics. The printhead supports both filament and pellet inputs and is compatible with popular slicers like PrusaSlicer, OrcaSlicer, and SuperSlicer. Currently in beta development, QUALUP invites users to join the tester group to experience the benefits firsthand.

The second innovation, QU PREDICT, is an artificial intelligence-based system designed to optimize 3D printing processes with high-temperature polymers such as Polycarbonate (PC), PEI, PEKK, and PEEK. Unlike traditional methods that address defects during or after printing, QU PREDICT analyzes G-Code before the printing process begins. By evaluating print parameters, part geometry, and environmental conditions, the AI identifies potential issues like warping, deformation, and surface cracking. It generates a predictive report with a graphical 3D visualization, highlighting problematic areas and allowing for early adjustments to print settings. This proactive approach reduces the incidence of defects and improves overall print quality.

QU PREDICT integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, requiring no specialized software. Users simply load the STL file, set parameters in their preferred slicer, and generate the G-Code. The AI then analyzes the file and provides optimization suggestions. Available as a standalone software solution, QU PREDICT is offered free during its beta phase, encouraging widespread adoption and feedback from the additive manufacturing community.

Industry Trends in Educational and Large-Format 3D Printing

In October 2024, UltiMaker, a Dutch manufacturer, released the MakerBot Sketch Sprint FDM printer, designed to support educational applications by significantly enhancing print speed and workflow. Part of the Sketch 3D printer series, this system is geared to increase engagement by reducing the wait time for printed models, enabling students to interact more closely with their projects. Capable of printing up to five times faster than standard desktop units, the Sketch Sprint ensures accuracy with features like a heated build plate and vibration control. UltiMaker has integrated this printer with its Digital Factory platform for streamlined management, allowing educators to oversee multiple print jobs through a single interface.

Simultaneously, French company AddUp has introduced MASSIF, its large-format metal 3D printer developed under the Metal Additive System, Sustainable, Industrial, Eco-Friendly (MASSIF) project. Set to be deployed for prototyping and initial production, the MASSIF printer offers a build volume 12 times larger than previous models and productivity increases of up to 300%. AddUp’s collaboration with partners like CETIM and Dassault Systèmes aims to enhance capabilities in the aerospace, defense, and space industries. Equipped with an in-process monitoring system, the MASSIF unit reduces material waste to less than 10%, aligning with industrial efforts to improve efficiency and meet sustainability targets.
