Materialising 3D Printed Sculptures

Art aficionados are in for a real treat following the opening of an exiting new exhibition in Belgium at the prestigious Gallo-Romeins Museum in the city of Tongeren. Nick Ervinck, who is a rising star on the Belgian art scene, is known for his works exploring the borders between different media to find interaction between virtual constructions and hand made sculptures. His sculptures, many of which are 3D printed, and other digitally created artworks offer new realities that challenge viewers to take a fresh look at the world around them.

As of this month Tongeren features a sculpture by Mr Ervinck inspired by the Jupiter Giant, which is the most celebrated statue in city. To celebrate this new statue, the Gallo-Romeins museum is holding a solo exhibition of Nick Ervinck’s works, The 9th Month (De 9de Maand), which includes several 3D printed sculptures produced by  Belgian company Materialise.

The team at Materialise have collaborated with Ervicnk for some time and and their spokesperson concluded:”Since Ervinck first approached Materialise in 2008 to print the sculpture GNIURKS_S, he has been pushing the boundaries of 3D Printing and challenging the company’s engineers with his intricate designs. He uses 3D printing to create thin, complex forms that are impossible to make by hand. Materialise is proud to have printed seven of Ervinck’s sculptures on display in the Gallo-Romeins Museum.”

The exhibition runs from September 15th 2012 – January 6th 2013 and is recommended viewing.
