3D Scanners

IF you need it, extra 3D Printed Incentive to back the Fuel3D Scanner

Last week I reported on the Fuel3D scanner, currently sourcing funding on Kickstarter. Well, even with 19 days still left on the clock, the success of the campaign is phenomenal. The money pledged is standing at $232,775. I’ve also seen much praise for the scanner/campaign and comments from backers that can’t wait to get their hands on one.

So, further incentive is hardly a necessity, and yet that is what the Fuel3D guys are offering. They contacted me earlier today to let me know about a limited edition 3D printed case for the Fuel3D scanner that will be available only to backers of the campaign. You might ask what’s so special about that, well let me tell you — the case has been designed by renowned 3D artist, Joshua Harker, who is considered a pioneer of 3D printed art and sculpture by many, me included and I am looking forward to meeting him in person at The TCT Show next month. The guys at Fuel3D put it like this though: “Along with his techniques, subject matter and execution, [Josh’s] experimentation in the dissemination of his art through digital media and the internet has garnered him international recognition and acclaim. His work is included in nearly 3,000 collections, alongside such notable artists as Andy Warhol and Ron English.”

Josh is one of the people working with the beta version of the Fuel3D scanner and he is obviously impressed, or he wouldn’t have agreed to this move, one assumes. But in vocalizing his opinion of the scanner, Harker said:

“I am hugely impressed with the quality of the scans that I have seen from the Fuel3D scanner and am intriqued by the multitude of possibilities such a tool can bring to the table for artists,” said Harker. “The very reasonable price means that more people will be able to use the technology to get creative with 3D images and continue to push the medium in exciting new directions. This access ushers in a new phase of liberated design. To channel forms from one dimension into another is a profoundly powerful ability once only associated with the occult… welcome to our new reality!”

The 3D printed polyamide casings, of which there will only be 50 made available to backers, are described as an “OUIJA planchette executed in the tangled filigree aesthetic.”

As added incentives go, I think this is a pretty good one!
