US-based 3D printer manufacturer 3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) posted $94.6 million in second-quarter (Q2) 2026 revenue, down 0.3% Y/Y from $94.8 million a year earlier.
The operating loss narrowed to $10.6 million from $15.4 million in the prior-year period, with lower operating expenses, supported by more than $60 million in annualized cost savings, contributing to the improvement. The $2.6 million tariff refund also supported adjusted EBITDA, while an isolated bad debt reserve partially offset the benefit.
The near-identical revenue figure, though, conceals a meaningful change in where the money is coming from.
According to the company’s Q2 2026 earnings report, healthcare revenue rose 6.9% Y/Y to $48.1 million, while industrial revenue declined 6.6% Y/Y to $46.5 million. A year ago, industrial was the larger of the two segments. That is no longer the case. Healthcare now accounts for roughly 51% of total revenue, a quiet inversion that reflects both where 3D Systems is finding traction and where it is losing it.
Dental Emerges Alongside MedTech Growth
The healthcare gains are spread across several application areas. Demand for direct metal printing systems used in orthopedic implants remains a central driver, with patient-specific anatomical modeling for surgical planning and trauma adding a parallel revenue stream.
On the dental side, the NextDent 300 system has more than 100 laboratory installations targeted by year-end. Early adopters appear to be expanding their installed base: one customer has purchased six 3D printers, a pattern that, if it holds across the broader dental customer base, could generate meaningful recurring materials revenue as labs scale denture production.
The industrial segment tells a more fractured story. Aerospace and defense continues to anchor the segment through applications in reusable rocket engines, satellite constellations, and related space hardware.
| Revenue ($) | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | Variance ($) thousands | % |
| Healthcare | $48.1M | $45M | +3.1M | +6.9% |
| Industrial | $46.5M | $49.8M | -$3.3M | -6.6% |
| Total revenue | $94.6M | $94.8M | -$0.2M | -0.3% |
Data center infrastructure has become a notable secondary driver, with revenue from semiconductor and high-performance computing applications climbing roughly 30% Y/Y in Q2, fueled by demand for metal-printed components used in GPU cooling and thermal management. The company also cited early-stage work in advanced energy, including a collaboration with Savannah River National Laboratory on turbine, nuclear, and fusion-related manufacturing.
But these areas of strength were not sufficient to offset the drag from legacy products and weaker non-core markets. Consumer-facing service bureaus and jewelry saw continued softness, some Middle East activity moderated, and the runoff of legacy systems and services continued to weigh on segment performance. Even after stripping out 2025 divestitures, industrial solutions revenue fell 3.7% Y/Y.
Non-GAAP gross margin slipped to 36.7% from 38.2% a year earlier, a 1.5-percentage-point decline that reflected a higher mix of hardware printer sales, a less favorable materials mix, and the comparison to a large regenerative medicine milestone recognized in the prior-year period.
Growth Markets Outpace the Legacy Base
For Q3 2026, the company guided revenue to $96 million to $99 million with Adjusted EBITDA -$3 million to -$1 million. Management limited its formal guidance to Q3, pointing to the inherently lumpy nature of capital equipment orders and ongoing uncertainty. Printer sales are expected to remain weighted toward Q4, consistent with customer capex cycles.
The core tension in 3D Systems’ results is one of velocity. Healthcare is growing, select industrial niches are expanding, and cost discipline has brought the company within range of EBITDA breakeven. But revenue was essentially flat Y/Y, and weakness across legacy and non-core industrial markets continues to erode revenue at a pace that offsets much of the forward progress.
Management’s stated path to sustained profitability depends on higher printer volumes in the second half driving greater polymer-material consumption and increased metal-parts production, turning hardware placements into recurring revenue. With Q3 guidance of $96 million to $99 million and Adjusted EBITDA still expected to be negative, that inflection has not yet arrived.
