Fat Boy Motorcycle’s Urban Legend Lives on Through 3D Printing

In the world of custom motorcycles, there are few models more venerated than Harley’s Fat Boy. The urban legend says its names come from a combination of the names used for the atomic bombs, Fat Man and Little Boy; however, Harley Davidson’s Fat Boy is a legend in its own right.

It single-handedly relaunched the American motorcycle manufacturer back in the early 90’s, when it was struggling and facing closure, and it is now launching Maurizio Casella’s 3D printing design business, with a new model to 3D print and assemble, inspired by the legendary ride.

Maurizio “Mao” Casella has been making a name for himself by creating a number of 3D printable models inspired by some of the most recognizable cult vehicles from the past: from the 2CV to the Ford Cobra, and from the original Fiat 500 to the Porsche 911, the 1957 Mercedes SL300 Gullwing to the Beetle. His first two-wheeled creation was the classic Vespa scooter from the 60’s.

It takes Mao between two weeks and a month to make each 3D model from scratch, which is pretty incredible. The models are all available as a single download from most 3D printable model marketplaces for $4.99 and can be obtained as a single download, which includes several STL files for all the parts, divided by color. Now it’s time for the Fat Boy.

Maurizio and I actually contacted HD to suggest offering the 3D model to their customers or perhaps implementing a new service to allow customers to obtain a 3D printed scale model of their own motorcycle. We have not heard from them and maybe the time is not yet right, but if they ever chose to go for it, they should definitely give Mao a call.
