Tinkercad, the popular web-based CAD tool, and MyMiniFactory have teamed up to launch the 2018 #TinkercadEaster design competition, sponsored by M3D.

Put your 3D design skills to the test by having a crack at this year’s “Surprise Egg” themed challenge. The winner will receive M3D’s latest 3D printer the Crane Quad as well as a years supply of filament.

Submissions for #TinkercadEaster close April 12

The only criteria for entry into the competition is that your design must feature an object within an object (like a matryoshka doll), and be submitted through Tinkercad using the MyMiniFactory plugin with the #TinkercadEaster tag.

The design does not have to be Easter relate. It will be judged by an expert panel based on originality, printability and the “element of surprise.”

If you’re struggling for ideas, browse submitted designs here, and check out the full brief.

Bringing approachable 3D design tools to the masses

Tinkercad is a user-friendly 3D CAD tool targeted at those new to 3D design. Built in tutorials and a colourful, unintimidating interface has made it a popular in classrooms, and it is a favourite of the Maker community.

Produced by Autodesk, Tinkercad features many utility features of the discontinued Autodesk 123D software suite. Models can easily be made using a library or primitive shapes (box, cylinder, star etc.) text, numbers and characters (this is where you’ll find a basic egg).

Complete design are accessible from any internet browser, and the program allows for easy import and export of 3D models in .stl, .obj and .svg formats, facilitating collaboration between users of different CAD tools.
