3D Systems Growth Spurt Continues with 30,500 Sq. Ft. Filament Facility

3D Systems is in a serious growth phase at the moment.  In addition to several acquisitions to expand its Quickparts prototyping and manufacturing service networking, the industry leader also announced the lease of a  500,000 square-foot facility in Rockhill, South Carolina for manufacturing and distributing its 3D printing systems.  Days later, 3D Systems issued a press release that it will also be opening a new 30,500 square-foot facility in Barberton, Ohio to increase its capacity for producing 3D printer filaments and assembling their accompanying cartridges for the company’s filament 3D printers.

The facility in Ohio will allow for the production of both of the company’s new filament materials. The first is the partially recycled rPET filament for the EKOCYCLE Cube, 3D printer, which is made up of 25% recycled Coke bottles.  The other is the company’s new “engineering-grade nylon filament” for the CubePro.  Along with the production of new materials and cartridge assembly, the facility will house 3D Systems’ thermoplastic R&D team.

3DS CEO, Avi Reichental, said of the new expansion, “This new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility will support our expansion and further development of advanced filament-based materials as we meet growing demand for our consumer printers. The Barberton facility doubles our footprint for filament-based materials manufacturing in the local area and reinforces our commitment to sustainable, local manufacturing.”

Mayor of Barberton, William Judge, reacted to the news, “We’re extremely pleased that 3D Systems selected the City of Barberton as its new home for this manufacturing site.  It demonstrates a strong commitment to local manufacturing and creating jobs in our community.”
