Innovation awards on CBS
The Science + Innovation Awards (SIA) is accepting nominations for two awards to be presented by Manufacturing USA. One award will honor educators who’ve demonstrated exceptional leadership and encouragement of their pupils, in order to improve manufacturing skills. The second award is for students, aged 13 or older, who have contributed to the advanced manufacturing community through new products, processes, or techniques.
CBS will broadcast the awards on November 17th & 18th. Nominee applications close on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 11:59PM (ET).
Additive Manufacturing Benchmark Test Series winners
A team from TWI Ltd and the Simulia brand of Dassault Systèmes has been named joint winners of an Additive Manufacturing Benchmark (AM Bench) Test Series.
Organised by the U.S. National Institute Standards and Technology (NIST), the AM Bench Test Series was set up to confront the challenges faced by those looking to harness AM. These challenges include distortion, residual stresses, and undesirable micro-structures.
The awards were given to groups which have contributed to the further improvement of AM benchmark tests. The two groups were awarded first place for ‘Best modeling results predicting the residual stresses within an as-built IN625 bridge structure’.
“We are delighted to have won this prestigious award with Dassault Systèmes for our joint numerical modelling work on the prediction of additive manufacturing distortions and residual stresses,” said Tyler London, team manager of TWI.
“The NIST AM-Bench series is reminiscent of the old Batelle round-robin on crack opening displacement and the more recent NeT welding residual stress round-robin, both of which have resulted in significant engineering analysis advances in their respective areas. The AM-Bench also raised quite a few questions on certain aspects of AM modelling that we look forward to investigating in the future. As an industry-facing organisation, TWI hopes these validated simulation tools will improve the wider adoption and certification of AM parts.”
Volkswagen design competition
Volkswagen has announced a 3D printing competition for its new car, the VW I.D. Buzz, a modern version of the iconic VW Bulli.
The Volkswagen I.D. Buzz is an electric minivan, first shown as a prototype at the 2017 North American International Auto Show. A ready-to-market version is planned to launch in 2022. Using 3D printing technology, VW has issued a challenge to create ideas for customizable and functional 3D-printed interior and exterior elements of the VW ID Buzz.
The submissions will be judged on their functionality, aesthetics and/or comfort, with winning applications earning cash prizes from a €27,300 total prize pool.. The submission deadline for the contest is September 20th.
The move by Volkwagen illustrates how large enterprises are seeking access design talent in a new manner. Recently, Swedish furniture manufacturer, IKEA, gained access to one of the largest 3D design communities worldwide at MyMiniFactory. The IKEA and MyMiniFactor 3D printing contest called for submissions that could function ‘off the grind’.
If IKEA sees potential in a submission, it could potentially become an official IKEA product.
FORMNEXT, a trade fair for Additive Manufacturing has announced that hall 3 has been filled 10 weeks prior to the exhibition. Exhibition Hall 3 will have 550 expected exhibitors and an exhibition space of 36,000 square meters.
It focuses on the efficient realization of parts and products, from their design to serial production. Formnext shows the future of innovative manufacturing. The conference set to take place alongside the exhibition will also highlight the latest trends and issues in additive manufacturing, along with clever ways in which it can be integrated into process chains in industrial production.

Digital Dot announces installation of new 3D printer.
Digital Dot, a Belgium based large format 3D printer provider, has announced that specialist 3D printing service bureau, 3D Next Level, has installed the first Massivit 1800 3D Printer in the region.
