The hype over these networks of amateurs seems overblown to me. I never gave the world access to any of my ink jet printers. I guess I fail to understand the appeal of giving the world access to my 3D printers. It costs the owner time, printer wear, materials, and shipping/handling. I bought the printers to save me time, not to create more work for me printing projects for others. There is a reason places like Shapeways have to charge so much to print your designs. I guess if I had nothing else to do, this might be an interesting way to make a few bucks, but I can’t imagine it competing well with professional services like Shapeways.
