Solidoodle Siemens 3D Printing

3D Printing & Everyday Problems

The following SiemensTV video features Mark Burhop, part of Siemens PLM’s development team, showing us how 3D Printers can be used to solve everyday problems. Mark uses a Solidoodle 2 to create a custom iPhone stand for his car. This example leads us to think how we will be solving small problems in the future, and what the effect on manufacturing will be. The video started out as Mark’s personal project, but as the people at SiemensTV saw it, they decided to add narration and extra footage to create an educational video for their channel.

I’m finding it pretty cool what you can do with a personal level 3DPrinter. Having worked with design software for so long, it is pretty satisfying to be able to create a “hard copy”.

What is really fascinating is the price. The Solidoodle is one of the least expensive 3D printers and while Solid Edge can be expensive, if you are a student or educator, you can get it for free. The is huge for enabling young makers learning about additive manufacturing. This is how my son got started and now I’m learning from him!
